Website & Community Feedback
ThinkClassic is a community that encourages feedback from our members. It's the contributions from our members and the exchange of knowledge that makes the development and operation of this website and community worthwhile.
This discussion thread is for members to share ideas and provide feedback on how we can further improve, grow and develop the site and community for the benefit of our users.
Website issues or matters that require immediate attention should instead be reported in the Reporting Site Issues discussion thread.
Please note that while we aim to take everyone's ideas and suggestions into account, sometimes it simply isn't possible to do so. The administrators of this site volunteer their time to ensure that it continues to run smoothly and work effectively, and undertaking massive development projects (such as an expansion of the site into other areas or a redesign of the software) is subject to the availability of time in already busy schedules.
Thanks,
~ iMic.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
This might seem silly, but how about a link to the front/home page at the bottom of every other page?
Other sites, such as the 68kMLA, have one.
Other than that, I'd say this forum's interface is quite perfect as is (I especially like how well it works on Classilla!).

Re: Website & Community Feedback
You mean the "Index" link that appears at the bottom of every page (and twice at the top)?

I need to figure out why it soaks up so much CPU time, though. Perhaps I can throttle that.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
The Buy, Sell, & Trade forum is only visible to logged-in registered members. I recommend you make that forum visible to everyone - it would make it much more useful and valuable, and would probably also help boost the membership numbers here. As it stands now, people selling stuff in that forum will only have a potential audience of a few hundred people, instead of the thousands of potentially interested non-members who might casually browse or find the site through a Google search. If they see a "for sale" posting they want to respond to, then they'll join the forum in order to reply, and then be more likely to join other discussions too.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
I would be willing to revise the permissions for the Buy, Sell & Trade forum. What I would like is to receive some feedback from traders in that forum to determine what permissions we should give each access level.
With our current system, the forum can not even be read by users with less than 30 posts. We could make the read access to that forum available for all users, including guests.
Would our current trading members be interested in selling to new registrations though? The question is whether we should also allow new members to reply to threads in the Buy, Sell & Trade forum. I'm open to the idea if our current trading members are.
Posting new sale listings / threads would still be limited to established members of the community (30+ posts). We could also alter this requirement in the process if necessary, but I would advise against decreasing it.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
Would it be possible to create an "unread posts" feature? I'd like a way to generate a list of all the postings I haven't read yet, with a "mark all as read" button if I want to catch up without reading them. Unless I've missed it, no such feature exists at the moment. The closest thing is "New", which is pretty good, but it resets each time I log in whether I actually read the posts or not.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
I believe FluxBB stores the last visited information based on the cookie that's set in the browser, and says "any thread with posts made after the last visited value should be considered new".
It could be doable if we could store the last visited time in the database, but then we'd have to record which threads have and haven't been viewed... I think. It's a difficult one. I haven't yet been able to find any modifications in the FluxBB repository that would do offer this functionality.

Is anyone else having problems accessing this site using Firefox 37.0.1?
Firefox updated on my MBP and now when trying to access the site a Secure Connection Failed error message pops up.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
Is that it? I suddenly had the same problem today as well. Very perplexing!
Anyway, I went to Advanced Preferences and clicked the Certificates tab, then unchecked "Query OCSP responder servers to confirm the current validity of certificates". This seems to be working.
The Other Site has the same issue, by the way, so I don't think it's anything ThinkClassic-specific.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
We use the same certificate authority as the other site. I wonder if there's an issue further up the chain.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
It's the OCSP server. I'm not sure what the cause is.
EDIT: here it is. It's StartCom's fault.

I can see how storing last read information for every thread could be a challenge. How about this, then: instead of updating the last visited information every time someone logs in, give the option of updating it only on request, when the user clicks a "mark all as read" button.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
I'll have a look through the forum code when I'm back home and see what I can find.
With the number of core modifications we would need to run to meet everyones needs with our current solution, it seems that eventually we may need to consider a transition across to another forum software package.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
I wouldn't say that's a "need" for me, but it would be nice, or something like. Sometimes it's a few days between visits, and the number of new posts is more than I can get through before being distracted by something else. Then I come back later and my "visited" timestamp has changed, so I may miss some stuff. Not the end of the word, just a little annoyance.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
OK, I'm back with another request - hopefully an easier one. Could we get a top bar link that lists ALL threads in reverse chronological order? This would be nearly identical to the current "Active" link, which only shows threads that have seen activity in the past day or so. Or if it's easier, just change the time cut-off for the existing Active link, and make it show all threads with activity from the past month, reverse sorted by date, instead of only threads with activity from the past day.
I find it difficult to keep up with conversations here on Think Classic, so I tend to miss a lot. I think this change would help. The "New" link doesn't really work for my browsing habits, because some short time after clicking New, those threads are no longer considered new for me, and they disappear from the new list whether I've read them or not. "Active" is an OK substitute as long as I check the site as least once a day, but if I don't log in that frequently, the list doesn't go back far enough.
Thanks for your consideration! :-)

Re: Website & Community Feedback
How about adding an "active this week" link to the list? 24 hour dropoff makes for a very short list and forgetful folks (raises hand ) might not be able to find a thread they didn't have time to respond to after the 24 hr.glass runs out. FWIW, I know I'd reply to more current topics if listed.

Re: Website & Community Feedback
Hi everyone,
Not sure if this is the right place to pos this but I just wanted to check interest here: I'm thinking of organizing a World Builder competition. World Builder was a big part of my childhood as I'm sure it was for many of you. I wanted to start a competition to make a game using WB in an emulator. Mr Ray Dunakin, who authored Another Fine Mess and A Mess O' Trouble has kindly agreed to sign a copy of AMOT on a Diskette as the prize!
I just wanted to bring some kind of distraction to current events with pandemics and maniac Presidents to take everyone back to a simpler time, the 90s.
If you are interested send me an email at rik.keenes@gmail.com and I'll get your details for a Wordpress site I'm going to make for it all.
