Carrera 040 question
So this is on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Macintosh … 5423c396bf
My question is... is it really an 040? the chip looks like it has 68030 printed on it. But it also looks soldered on there. What up with this?

Re: Carrera 040 question
That should just be an adapter, not the actual accelerator.

Re: Carrera 040 question
Educated guess:
That's only the adapter for the Carrera040, which would plug into the "PDS" Slot (very likely a IIci Cache Slot adaptation, which is NOT a PDS per Apple Spec.) on the adapter.
The original 68030 is socketed on the adapter after removal from the MoBo, but the socket on the adapter has pins long enough (like a wire wrap socket) to seat it in the vacated '030 socket on the Mobo. Compare the length of the pins to the soldertail termination of the PDS slot connector. Think of this as a kluged version of the "socketed" PowerCache for the SE/30. It looks like a straight thru adaptation (no active components) like the LCIII PowerCache adapter. The IIcx PowerCache adapter is almost identical.
Putting the IIcx' proc on board allowed for full '030 compatibility as a "stock" IIcx when the Carrera'040 would be turned off in the control panel to run recalcitrant code.
As I said, just educated guesses based upon a lot of accelerator/adapter playtime & research.
edit: Heh, short answers beat long answers to press!

Ahhhhh! thank you for enlightening me. I guess I totally misinterpreted how the thing was supposed to work. That was very helpful information.

Re: Carrera 040 question
De nada, mj. I sent the seller a "question" about the card with an abbreviated version of that explanation.

Re: Carrera 040 question
This listing was ended by the seller because the item is no longer available. Ended: Aug 30, 2015 , 8:56PM
That was really fast, seller must be a stand up guy!
He's got an interesting SE SuperDrive with ThickNet/10bt NIC inside.
Dunno what SE NICs go for these days, but the total package probably isn't too redonkulous to the right buyer.

Re: Carrera 040 question
That NIC is AUI/RJ45 so you should be good to run in the modern world.
