StuffIt to Disk Image tool

In another thread, we were discussing the possibility of making a StuffIt to Disk Image tool that runs on Windows, OSX, or Linux. This would be useful for anyone downloading vintage Mac software from the internet, who wants to put it on a real floppy disk, or use it with Floppy Emu. Sometimes vintage Mac software is distributed as a disk image, that can be used directly. But often it's distributed as a StuffIt archive (.sit file), of which there are many different versions. So you must get the .sit file onto a vintage Mac or a Mac emulator somehow, then run StuffIt expander, then use some other tool to take the decompressed files and generate a floppy disk image file from them (assuming they're small enough to fit).

I did a little searching, and it seems that the StuffIt spec is not public. But there's a reverse engineered spec documented at https://code.google.com/p/theunarchiver … ffItFormat and https://code.google.com/p/theunarchiver … uffItSpecs . I'm not sure it's complete, though. It's part of an open source tool called the unarchiver, which appears to support .sit files, so maybe the relevant code could be lifted from there.

I have half a mind to download some random .sit archives from Macintosh Garden, and start digging through the data with a hex editor, to see how well it matches that reverse-engineered spec.

This hypothetical tool would need to decompress StuffIt archives (hopefully reusing code from the unarchiver), hold the result in memory, and then create an HFS disk image from the result. I think there are open source HFS implementations out there, from which code might be borrowed. Still the whole thing might be quite a lot of work.

Hmm... That would be interesting.

FWIW, SynalizeIt! is really great for grubbing through data like that, instead of sitting there with hexdump.
