Q900 RAM check disabled
I dusted off my Quadra 900 today to test out an e-machines futura II card I got today (the video card with the ethernet option on it, great for limited machines like the IIsi). My Q900 has the full 256MB RAM, which takes a long time to check. Like minutes. Well, who has that kind of time? Nobody. Seeing the prepopulated ROM SIMM socket in the Q900, I decided enough was enough and it was time to disable that nonsense.
Quadra-900-mod.rom Q900 ROM with ROM checksum disabled and RAM test disabled
This should work in a Q700 as well, since I think the 700 and 900 have the same ROM image.
The other thing I noticed is the futura II video card has a splash screen it displays before the usual stipple pattern. I had never noticed it before, presumably because the RAM test takes long enough it never got displayed before.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
I used the 2MB version just because the quadra rom is only 1MB, and they can't seem to address substantially more than that.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
I just splurged and bought a load o rom simms from Doug Brown's site. These things are so useful its not even funny.
Rob - does the q900 have a rom simm slot...
from what i understand these rom simm slots could end up being harder to find.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
Both my Q700 and 900 have a SIMM socket, so I'd assume they all have them.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
the 610 and the 650 don't and most of the lc475's don't
i think the q800 doesn't either. there are more pretty sure.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
The Q800 uses the same board as a 650. Solder pads are there for the slot, but, no slot.

I have an LC475 with a slot and a Q605 without. Haven't looked in the Q800.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
The Q840 I just got has pads for a slot.
Not sure if they were supposed to have a slot there or not (I suppose early ones did, and mine could be later on the production line).

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
To clarify what I meant, I believe all Q700 and 900's have the ROM SIMM socket populated and I have no reason to believe mine are special. That's not to say all macs or all 68k macs have it, just those models.
I've got a C610 that had the ROM SIMM socket populated, but that seems to be unusual. Similar with the 840av, some have been seen with the socket, although those seem to be the vast minority. I have no reason to believe that is the case with my 700 and 900's.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
I have some random 840av ROM SIMMs that came from internal Apple around here, so there must have been slots on some of them.

Re: Q900 RAM check disabled
lol rob its ok... Man you are the dude no matter what... LOL... I don't expect you to know the in's and out's of everything and be 100% accurate
its awesome the crazy sick hacking you have done so far... the 8 meg addressable rom with the 030 mac's, that is so great.
and even the large ram support for some of the 040 mac's... that is a life saver! especially for those that are pushing 128 megs in their 605/475.
or if you are really crazy and push 512 megs in the Q650!!!!!!!!!!
