G3 B&W OS 8.6 -> 9.2.2

Apparently my Formac ProRaid PCI SCSI card cannot work in OS 8.6. If it can, well I'd be a happy camper. Maybe I am missing something.
However, I believe it requires OS9.2 and that's why it isn't working.
Is there a direct method to upgrade from 8.6 to 9.2? I have several versions of OS 9.
The 9.2.2 CD I have tells me that I can't upgrade without doing a clean install (I would prefer not to.)
I suppose I could move all of my software to another partition, format, install, copy it all back.
Anyone accomplish a straight upgrade before? Google is giving me a headache with iOS 8 coming out yesterday, and OS X 10.8 to 10.9 upgrade information as well.....

EDIT: Maybe a clean installation is the way to go. Been awhile since I did anything besides format.

Re: G3 B&W OS 8.6 -> 9.2.2

I'm just doing the 'clean install'.
I could have upgraded to 9.0, then 9.1, and then 9.2.
Too much time just to use my SCSI card for ~20 minutes today.
All of my stuff will still be there and I can just drag and drop old extensions into the new extensions folder., all it did was make a new system folder. All is good.
