help! mac se wont boot.

So I was planning to move yesterday so I pulled some of my old macs out of storage. Among them was my prized mac se. I booted it up and it worked just fine! so I played a game of lemmings and packed it into a tote. This morning there was a major development.... turns out I wont be moving. Thought I'd have some more fun on my mac... but now its giving me the question mark floppy disk!! Noooooooo. It has a 100mb hard drive in there with about 30 games. I was able to boot up on floppy but disk first aid isnt able to recognize the hard drive at all. I tried opening it up and disconnecting/reconnecting the hard drive. Still no go.

1. Is there anything else I can try to revive this drive? I put a lot of work into the collection of software on there.

2. If not... can somebody point me in the direction of a replacement hard drive I can buy. I do not have much money right now... I could afford $50 but nothing more ( also, I live in canada so shipping prices are way higher for me) I would rather get a new HD than replace the mac because it has an 25mhz acceleration card in it.

any help would greatly be appreciated. This computer is my pride and joy... Thanks!

Re: help! mac se wont boot.

The HD often physically fails. You could take the drive out and shake it - I've also heard of putting them in the freezer to make them read for a short period of time. Another brave soul opened one up and removed the sticky goo that some Quantums have. But ultimately, that drive is going to fail again even if you get it working.

The best replacement for those drives is a SCSI2SD converter. They are about $70 and will future-proof your SE.

I confirmed that it is the head that is stuck...

are you sure that adapter will work? I watched a youtube video where some guy tries to use one and... has some issues.

Here it is...

Re: help! mac se wont boot.

I saw that - I wish he'd follow up on that and tell us what the issue was.

Here's a success story. I can't say that I've done it yet, but I see it in my future.

Also a guide.

Re: help! mac se wont boot.

If it is a Miniscribe drive, try blowing the dust out of the optical sensor and moving the actuating arm a quarter turn to see if it will find track 0 again.
