Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

Anyone happen to have driver/software for the Tecmac Mac Drive hdd ? (an hdd for 128k/512k Mac's)

EarlyHardDrive.jpg

I just received one and it came with the cable, but no software. I am in a process of opening it up and taking a look of it soon.

Seems to be somekind of rarity thesedays, no drivers/software or manuals to be found anywhere.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

How does it connect, floppy? If so, does the HD20 INIT work with it?

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

Most of those used the serial port.  I'd love to figure out the protocol.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

Ah the protocol used over serial port?   BMOW said that he is getting approximately 55kb/sec through the floppy port with his HD20 Emu.  I know the mac serial ports are RS-422, just wondering.. the best i ever got through a local talk connection was between 3-5KB/sec,  Witch makes his HD20 emu rather nice!

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

From http://www.mac512.com/?p=623:

Tecmar had their Mac Drive system it had one flaw that the 5MB removable cartridge would not be able to be ejected due to the 128K of RAM in the original Macintosh could not hold all of the disk file names in the Finder at that time. The special version of the Finder was included to support disks larger than the Mac’s floppy disk 400K size. This was reported the least problematic hard drive on the market in November 5, 1984. The Mac Drive hooked to only the Modem port. This hard drive retailed for $1,995.

The replacement Finder is interesting.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

I know, I ripped the data from the Mac Bottom serial HDD. The driver is on it somewhere, but no real way to extract/use it as the formatting structure for data/resource forks isnt exactly standard.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

I'll be opening the unit soon when time permits to take a look inside.

Somebody at applefritter have the disks! Hope to get the images/disks so i can try this how it works.

I know.. it's superbly slow. But that was about only option there were for the 128k/512k Mac's at the time and for what price, those were expensive.

Back of the drive:

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

RS-422 (EIA RS-422-A Standard) is the serial connection used on Apple computers. It provides a mechanism for transmitting data up to 10 Mbits/s. RS-422 sends each signal using two wires to increase the maximum baud rate and cable length. RS-422 is also specified for multi-drop applications where only one transmitter is connected to, and transmits on, a bus of up to 10 receivers.

wow that is 1 +/- megabyte/sec

granted that says a bus of up to 10 receivers,
not sure how many are inside any given MAC.

An emu version of this would be compatible across more mac's too.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

saw this

Mac serial ports have two speed options, one controlled from the motherboard and a second speed set by an external clock. With external clocking, serial speeds of 500 kbps to 2 Mbps are possible.

Before ethernet became inexpensive and popular, there were external LocalTalk adapters with high speed clocks that could drive the serial ports on 68020- and 68030-based Macs to 920 kbps. Unfortunately, the companies that made them didn’t standardize, so different brands could only communicate with each other at the 230.4 kbps LocalTalk speed. Still, it was a clever hack – and something Apple designed into the system, as indicated in the Byte preview of the Macintosh in February 1984. (8 MHz 68000-based Macs are limited to 500 kbps with external clocking; the CPU can’t move the data faster than that.)

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

This is a really old thread but I just came into possession of a Tecmar MacDrive with the discs, manuals, etc. I can see about imaging the discs if they're needed. I'll probably be selling the drive and 10-odd discs that go with it soon.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

If anyone needs it, I have archived the "Tecmar MacDrive System 2.2", "Tecmar MacDrive System 2.3" and a System 6.0.3 disk modified to work with the MacDrive. I also have instructions on how to update a System file with the MacDrive INITs. I can probably scan the Manual too.

Re: Tecmar Macdrive driver/software?

This should have all of it in a zip archive.
