Can I insert a Macintosh Plus motherboard into a Macintosh Classic?

I know it sounds daft.

But I have:

  1. a 110v (USA) Macintosh Plus with a blown power/graphics board and an intact motherboard

  2. a 240v (Australian) Macintosh Classic with destroyed CPU motherboard

Does anyone think it is possible to make a Frankenstein bride love child out of taking the Motherboard out of the classic and replacing it with the Mac Plus' board?
Are there any other considerations of this marriage of parts that I should be thinking of?

Re: Can I insert a Macintosh Plus motherboard into a Macintosh Classic?

Short version, it's not possible.

Long version, it could be possible but there would be a lot of work involved.  Off the top of my head:
- The Plus motherboard is physically bigger than the Classic, so it wouldn't fit in the Classic's case
- The Plus motherboard has a different rear port layout, so you'd have to make new cutouts for the rear ports
- The Plus motherboard has the keyboard jack on the front, so you'd have to cut a hole in the front of the Classic's case to use the keyboard
- The Plus motherboard has a different analog board/video connector, so you'd need to do some re-wiring, assuming everything else between the two is compatible
- The Plus uses a physical knob to adjust brightness where the Classic does it via software

Your best bet IMHO would be to repair/replace the broken parts in each as combining the two into one machine seems like more effort than it's worth.

Probably the only cross compatible parts would be memory. Does your Classic have the memory expansion riser? If it doesn't, it's probably not worth fooling around with until you find one.

How do you know either is well and truly dead? Have you tried replacing caps in either machine?

Re: Can I insert a Macintosh Plus motherboard into a Macintosh Classic?

Hi there, thanks for both your detailed answers.

My soldering skills are hit and miss at best.
Evil capitalist, thanks for the advice. I was having problems getting Macplus parts locally so I was exploring this option. I have the Macplus on me but the classic is still in the post on its way to me. I'm told that it has leaking capacitors so I figured it was worth asking whether I could put the Macplus board into the classic -  that's a definite "no" then.

JT you are correct, I could replace the capacitors or at least clean the gunk off the motherboard but I wasn't sure if I could find the parts or execute the clean properly. The youtube video does make it look easy though

The only other option I could explore is that is I cannibalize the video/power card and CRT from the classic and try to install it into the Macplus machine.

That won't easily be done per:

Sounds like you've got a couple of good candidates for recapping. I should talk, I haven't even done one myself yet. neutral

Well darn it. smile anybody got a spare Mac plus graphics card / power supply board?!

Are the caps common enough to be obtained from a RadioShack or Jaycar (Australian)
