Backlit Portable With Jailbars and Sad Mac

Hi,

Sometime within the last two years, Techknight generously repaired this Portables logic board for me, but now it seems to have died again.

When I try to start it up, I get an instant death chime and a sad Mac. Until tonight, there were no jailbars, but they seem to have appeared today out of nowhere. Perhaps it's a progression of the problem? Failing onboard RAM? EDIT:I was an idiot and bent some pins in the display connector. Straightening them out fixed the jailbar problem. It seemed to start after I accidentally dropped it (it wasn't a big drop; maybe a foot or so at most), so I'm kinda worried that I damaged it somehow.

And before you ask, it has been recapped, and I'm using a properly functioning battery with a proper Portable AC Adapter. I've tried booting it without the floppy drive attached to no avail.

Thanks,

c

Re: Backlit Portable With Jailbars and Sad Mac

the 2 buttons on the side, the resets and interrupt (left side by that locking type switch), did you try those ?  sometimes startup gets corrupted and that interupt then reset helps.

As the 9 volt present or not, the way the battery switch held in by the battery door is can do goofy things, and the drop may have made it seem like the battery was out while on.......maybe......

will not hurt to try, my regular portable does it from time to time.

Re: Backlit Portable With Jailbars and Sad Mac

I've tried resetting it many times. I have a 9 volt battery installed.

I've seen these two sad Mac codes: 00000010/0020CD34 (most common) and 0300130F/00001FFA (if I press the interrupt button). Any ideas what these mean?

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the parts from Macdrone arrived (thank you!), and I replaced the cable. For the first time in quite awhile, the backlight works! Yay!!

Im glad the backlight works, but wish it was functioning as youd hoped.  Hopefully techknight will chime in he is the man.

Re: Backlit Portable With Jailbars and Sad Mac

OK, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm trying to interpret the above sad mac code. It would seem that the minor error, CD34, would indicate a Power Manager problem. The Major code, 0010, I can't figure out.

Ideas?

EDIT: OK, some new information! After some poking and prodding, it briefly showed two different codes: 01020300/72507250 and 01020900/A54ED8A6. What do these mean? Also, when the second code showed up, the display backlight went dead (removing and replacing the battery solved that one, thank goodness!)

Re: Backlit Portable With Jailbars and Sad Mac

You probably lost another trace in the RAM circuit. I had to fix one IIRC. there is probably another one lurking.

CD34/CD36 codes are the 8-bit nexus bus between the VIA and PMU IC breaking.

Also, couple weeks back I did a full pin-map of the LCD and inverter control circuits. I just didnt get time to map it back to the physical connector yet on the backlit model. its an 8-bit data display with 2 clock lines (Even-Odd), latch, and frame/line sync.

But, at least now I have signal-for-signal map for the LCD itself as well as the inverter.
