What's the "best" version of System 7 for 68030 machines?

I'm putting together a default disk image for the ROM SIMM, and wondering what version of System 7 I should stick on there. Bonus points for earlier/smaller versions, since there's not a lot of space available, and I'd like to leave some room for other programs too.

I believe there are some versions (7.0?) that are known to be buggy, and should be avoided.

The machines targeted are the SE/30, IIci, IIsi, IIx, IIfx, and others in a similar range.

I'm thinking either 7.0.1 + "System 7 Tune-Up", or 7.1.1? I'm not sure how they compare in size for a minimal install. As far as I'm aware, the only really interesting thing that was new in 7.1.1 was the Fonts folder replacing Font/DA Mover.

7.1 is generally the place to be, any of the 7.1.x variants would be fine.  Generally speaking, anything from 7.6.1 and earlier should work fine all the way back to 7.1, if you bring the bundled extensions and whatnot with it.
7.1's main claim to fame was implementing a bunch of IEEE standards, although I don't know which ones off the top of my head.  The internal codename was "CubeE" for this reason.

Is 7.1 with System Update 3.0 a good choice, or do I need 7.1.1 (which I think is also called System 7 Pro)? I can't remember if 7.1 was the version that was supposed to be all buggy, and whether System Update 3.0 fixed all those bugs or if 7.1.1 did. I may be thinking of System 7.0 and its "disappearing files" bug, which I believe was fixed in 7.0.1 or something.

You shouldn't need 7.1.1, that includes lots of other things like applescript and keychain.  7.1 with update 3.0 seems fine to me.

Yep, as far as performance is concerned, 7.1 with System Update 3.0 is the way to go. Its also a lot lighter than 7.5 onwards which is important if you're putting it on a ROM SIMM.
