CFM-68k won’t load, ever, regardless of Mac OS version. Any idea why?

Hi guys. Over the past year or so, I haven’t done that much retrocomputing due to schedule interference by my other hobbies, but I have had occasion to install various versions of System / Mac OS 7 and 8 on my only two 680x0 Macs (a Classic II and a Quadra 840av). In every case, whether due to obsessive completism or to actually wanting to run a program that requires it, I sooner or later got around to installing the latest version of CFM-68k. Regardless of whether I got it from one of the Mac OS installation CDs or by downloading it from any of the various Apple Software Downloads ad-hoc mirror sites, after installing it, it simply Will. Not. Load. at boot time. The marching icon on the boot screen always has a red X across it and CFM software won’t run. Ever! What am I missing here?

Are any of those in 24-bit mode? What specific versions of Mac OS? Some versions don't need the enabler.

Mostly OS 8.1. The others were at least one and possibly both of System 7.1.0 and OS 7.6.1. (Determining specifics would require booting the Classic II, which is somewhat problematic just now due to the present state of the computer room.) All installs were operated in 32-bit addressing mode, as I only ever switch to 24-bit mode when running software that won’t otherwise run. I don’t have many of those and I think the last time I used one was over a decade ago.

8.1 doesn't need the Enabler. 7.1 does, though, so that seems odd.

I keep reading the title of this thread as "CP/M-68k won't load..." and thinking "was there ever a version of that for Macs? Maybe for the Lisa..."  ;P

Afaik, you can only run Lisa Office, MacWorks and Xenix on Lisa. Were there actually other OSes that run on Lisa?

There was the Pascal Workshop, which IIRC ran as it's own environment (not under LisaOS), so would count as an OS in my book.

There are references to a Lisa version in some old magazines and newsgroup hits, but if it did exist it seems to have been lost to history? (It's a far simpler OS than Xenix so it certainly would have been technically possible and it would of filled that vital gap in, er, no, even at the time there wasn't much of a reason to run it.)

Re: CFM-68k won’t load, ever, regardless of Mac OS version. Any idea why?

As a newcomer to this esteemed forum, I am simultaneously (1) relieved that the type of 90° threadjacking I have on occasion accidentally perpetrated elsewhere is apparently not especially out of place in these premises, and (2) vexed most mightily that this specific threadjacking now contains more posts than my original query AND all constructive replies to it combined… Heh!

Seriously, though, does anyone know at what point CFM-68k 4.0 became inherent in the OS as opposed to a bundled package on the installation CD or, in older releases, a separate download? (I am unable to closely examine the installer discs myself because my 840av is failing to boot at the moment. Its boot drive suffers from intermittent stiction.) What would cause it not to load at boot time, either way? It doesn’t appear to be working under OS 8.1, where it is supposed to always work, either. This is completely inexplicable based on the information available to me (which is, alas, really not enough to work with).

What's the app you're trying to run that needs it?

I think they started bundling it with Mac OS 8.0. I think its Finder needs it.
