Re: PExProjRedux_II: the inevitable 2kTeens franchise reboot . .

Hey,

Have been digging in my images of Mac OS X Public Beta (install disk) and an installed image of 10.1.4 and 10.1.5 with no intial luck.

Then remebered about locations of where platform drivers were kept.  On the beta think the PEX would have been with either the PowerSurge Architecture - certainly not the gossamar one which was the Beige G3, Pismo and iMacs onwards.

Then rembered to stop looking for the platform driver kext but actully within the XNU root.

Found this in the beta: http://opensource.apple.com/source/xnu/ … ExpressPE/

Still there under 10.1: http://opensource.apple.com/source/xnu/ … ExpressPE/

Still there in 10.3 (think they changed how platform experts worked: http://opensource.apple.com/source/xnu/ … rmExpert.h
enum {
  kChipSetTypePowerSurge = 0,
  kChipSetTypePowerStar,
  kChipSetTypeGossamer,
  kChipSetTypePowerExpress,
  kChipSetTypeCore99,
  kChipSetTypeCore2001
};

Also interesting to note that hiding in plain sight was the support for intel chips! (go up a levels)

Also interesting that on the open source website the platform driver for the Biege G3 etc (Gossamar) isn't available - nor is the PEX ones... at somepoint will try to install Public Beta and see what KEXTS lurk within.

If anyone has 10.1, 10.2 or 10.3 installed anywhere please look in System ▸ Library ▸ Extensions and send/post a file listing of all .kexts present.

This is also a good grounding on how some of Xpostfacto worked.

Re: PExProjRedux_II: the inevitable 2kTeens franchise reboot . .

Done a bit more googling and found:

http://eshop.macsales.com/OSXCenter/XPo … eadID=5643

Using this info from my previous post:
kChipSetTypePowerSurge = 0,
  kChipSetTypePowerStar,
  kChipSetTypeGossamer,
  kChipSetTypePowerExpress,
  kChipSetTypeCore99,
  kChipSetTypeCore2001
};

Found out that:  ApplePowerStarPE.kext - platform export for Power Star Macs including the PowerBook 2400, 3400, 3500, and G3, Performa 54xx, 55xx, and 64xx, UMAX Apus, Power Mac 6500, and 20th Anniversary Mac

ApplePowerSurgePE.kext - platform expert for Power Surge Power Macs including the Power Mac 7200, 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500, and 9600 and PowerCenter

So OSX had initial support for the Mac Clones!

But most importantly:

ApplePowerExpressPE.kext - platform export for Power Express Macs - PowerMac G3 Pro?

Amusing report from: https://68kmla.org/forums/index.php?/to … 3/?p=28393

Seriously, kexts for the PowerExpress? That never made it out of prototype or initial production stage, did it? I'd love to get my hands on one regardless. Maybe somebody over at OWC had one and decided that running OS X it would kick some ass.

So, if anyone could install XpostFacto extentions to their machine, extract the ApplePowerExpressPE.kext this is one of the missing files from 10.0/10.1/10.2 that the PEX will need.

OK, I went through the process and got the ApplePowerExpressPE kext. Quite fun installing xpostfacto. Haven't done that in... years.

OK, I'm not sure the best way to share it though. Should I email it to you?

Cool - you could zip it up and then upload to dropbox or other service and share the link here?

Hmmmm...

Interesting Auction...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-PowerExpr … 4ae3a964e4

I think it's this one, based on the permanent marker marking location, but the one in the auction has the AV ports (with the panel removed) and other upgrades.

http://www.isellmacs.com/macsystems.htm

If it's the same one, it's Mark Crutchfield's old PEX from way back when this all started.

I wanna bet that thing boots. Thats a lot of extra hardware to have in a dead box. At least it has a ROM simm.

Re: PExProjRedux_II: the inevitable 2kTeens franchise reboot . .

Its really neat but brings some questions.  I have an unmarked case, with an apple board, 6 slot.  With the processor card in an AV card cannot be placed in its slot.  So I must have a 9600 board and case since all the other ports line up?  It has an LVD scsi card with 2 drives connected and scsi zip and CD drive.

I guess I wandered as I did not reach a real point, but without seeing the motherboard I could put an LVD scsi port in place of the DB25 with my card and limited soldering skills.  How do you know other than by their word that its a proto?

How is it a photo? The board, that is not a 9600 board and matches the ones posted here. But its also not a Manhattan, so not sure why they are saying it is.

He wants $9700 for that? At least his sense of humour is intact, even if the computer might not be.

Uhm... don't 8600s and 9600s have a blue latch as well?

Sorry, I asked a little too vague, I guess I wanted to know about all of them using that case style? Either way I never seen the latch on any of the x600s

I thought all 8600's and 8600's had the Bondi Blue case button? My Beige G3 has one.

The two 9600's, the 8600, and the beige G3 I owned all had that button, plus the two latches to flip the case open.
