Peripherals Links Project: Rev. 4.0 (ThinkClassic)

Links Project_ReBoot_14.9.2

I can no longer edit the LinksProj in either of its iterations, so I just did a very hard (for me) reset of a pet project running on and off for over 12 years.  hmm

12 Years, 5 Months and 6 days ago, I typed this up:

Posted - 27 Mar 2002 :  17:35:37 LINKS PROJECT-Standard Operating Procedures:

SURFING thru some of my favorite forums, I ran across an amazing link posted by someone on Fritter. From now on I'll post any interesting peripherals links (others too) that I find in this thread, and I would appreciate it if anyone else who finds something interesting would post it here for myself and the rest of the gang to share.

ORGANIZATION of these links by editing them into this first message will be a priority. Suggestions for the development of some decipherable outline format that will allow easy reference and for the other mods to choose the best links to add to the website would be appreciated. We'll make up SOP as we go, but don't worry about posting something that's been done before, new recruits will be coming here for a basic peripherals course if we're lucky, repetition is to be expected and excitement displayed in the posts sharing new discoveries or in reaction to learning something new from the posts here is to be encouraged.

DISCUSSION of the sites and peripheral goodies on an ongoing basis would be great if we can maintain it. I don't want anybody making fun of basic questions. In this forum it's only stupid NOT to ask 'em if you've got 'em. I'll never make fun of anybody who asks ANYTHING if it's an honest effort to gain knowledge, and anybody who ridicules someone else on my watch will think twice before repeating the offense.

GOOGLING  ( .  .  .  well it seemed a good thing back then hmm ) Making the DuckDuckGo for goodies is something I've taken just a little bit too far™,and we could all use a little help when it comes to running down good information links. Go find 'em and then share 'em! If I or one of the regulars tell you to google, it means we think you're on the right track. If you've thought of a new way to string related parameters together to speed up the search process, share them. Learning to qualify the hits that are returned from an inquiry is something that I, for one, would really like to learn more about, so post the search string from google with an explanation. If you can make another search engine sit up and beg, we’ll all want to hear about it! If we compare notes and try to explain these strategies to each other, we'll all have the search engines jumping thru hoops.

OVERLAP of discussions here with the software and machine specific forums will be unavoidable, so don’t worry about posting a great link to something unrelated to peripherals. If it is suggested that a discussion here should be moved, great! The author should repost the topic where the appropriate mod can make sure everyone gets the maximum benefit from the interchange, make sure to cross-link the two threads for easy navigation. After that is done, I will padlock the topic as a badge of honor, signifying great stuff to be found on the other end of the link.

EXPERIMENT by trial and error is what this project is about and I'll be adapting the ground rules as we go. My next post will be the running compilation and there will be a link to this rules & regs post in some other topics that will develop. If you have a suggestion about how we can better work together in uncovering new info, this thread is the place to speak up. If it's a technical question or suggestion regarding our forums, this site or the web, post them in the website forum.

INTERLINKING with other forums/posts/discussions as much as possible will allow a newcomer to jump around using these shortcuts. Pertinent info wherever it may be, in active, dormant or even locked threads, can be made easily accessible if we try to base this project on the model of the WWW. If you remember something applicable from previous discussions, track it down and post the links. If it's on another site, quote just enough to act as a short answer, credit and link to the source for more detailed info and explain what you liked about that other site. If every member contributes just a few really good links and descriptions of their favorite sites, we'll all have guided access to some of the best info on the web at our disposal.

CONTENT
and easy access to it are the holy grail of the web. (except for the advertising interests it seems *sigh*) I think we might be able to amass quite a knowledge base for the 68kMLA, I've been saying all along that it is thru the personal interactions between the members in live discussions that we learn the most and that that is the most important kind of DYNAMIC CONTENT that we have to offer. If we act as a team in trying to assemble these gems and the links to the quality information from which they were harvested, we could end up with a 68kMLA website chock full of some of the very best static content on the web.

FUN is something I expect to have a lot of in this process. Don't worry about being silly or off topic, something said in jest can lead to insight, new search parameters, and ultimately, to solutions for the problems of others, let's get to it!
