Original 1984 Macintosh Displaying "Sad Mac" Error... HELP!

Hey guys, I picked up an original 1984 Macintosh 128K (this was manufactured before the 512K even existed so it doesn't even have the later-added 128K branding).

It's in beautiful shape, with everything original included, however, upon power, I get a "Sad Mac" error code 046D32.

Does anyone know what this means and how I may be able to fix it? I want to see if I can boot this baby up and get to the desktop, like the good ol' days.

Thanks!

It's a memory error but the sub code is garbage. Either you have multiple bad RAM chips or one or more supporting chips for the memory are bad.

Daily Drivers: 27" iMac 2.8 GHz Quad-Core i7 (Late 2009), 21.5" iMac 2.7GHz Quad-Core i5 (Late 2013), 11" Macbook Air 1.6 GHz i5 (Mid-2011)

Okay, thanks for the quick response.

Any ideas on how I can repair these issues (I can attempt myself) or workarounds?

Last resort is me sending the board out to someone lol. Just curious.

Check out the post here: https://ethandicks.wordpress.com/2013/1 … macintosh/

He had a similar error code, identifying 6 bad RAM chips (out of 16 total), and that was the true problem. Your error code means 8 bad RAM chips, so maybe you can beat his record!

Re: Original 1984 Macintosh Displaying "Sad Mac" Error... HELP!

Hi,

from the sad mac codes, 5 are probably bad (04 6032)

My guess is that the following ones are bad:

F6 (0002)

F9 (0010)

F10 (0020)

G10 (2000)

G11 (4000)

i will buy a set of chips and clip new ones above those bad units for a test (biggybacking) if i'm correct you will be presented with the floppy disk icon and question mark.

If not, the sad mad code will change to another one... will not change if chip is good.

Single Chip Identification
Data Bit    Location    Sub Code Bits
0    F5    0001
1    F6    0002
2    F7    0004
3    F8    0008
4    F9    0010
5    F10    0020
6    F11    0040
7    F12    0080
8    G5    0100
9    G6    0200
10    G7    0400
11    G8    0800
12    G9    1000
13    G10    2000
14    G11    4000
15    G12    8000

Once this done, remove the bad ones and put the new ones instead.

better to have all changed in the end, but first thing first.
